Gardening World - 'Jambu Air' (水翁)

I have all variety of fruit trees at my backyard and even my garden. Well, to be fair to myself, I am not a gardening person. Thus, do not expect seeing me watering plants, fertilizing, sorting plants under the hot sun, it is just not me. Plant watering is indeed an occasional work for me. But, why am I having so many plants at home. Do figure out yourself.

One thing I am happy of myself, is able to eat healthily, much of organic and fruitful fruits at home. Fruits obviously bare from flower... and here is how it looks like at the early stages. Ants favourite hangout place.

Then it went this way...

Later its petal dropped...

Fruits are growing on the way...

Finally, they are ripen.

Stomach Ache Remedies - Ceylon Tea

There are many natural remedies to cure stomach ache. I know of one, which I am gonna share below. After googl'ing around, I found more.... honestly, not too sure whether they are effective. It is all depends what type of stomach ache one is having. Know your body well, then you could tell, that is my advice. Stomach ache and stomach cramp are two different conditions, it may ended up needing different remedies.

http://www.myhomeremedies.com/static/stomach-ache.html shares quite a number of home remedies collected from others. Good for reference.

What I could share below is an effective (at least from personal experience) that when I had stomach discomfort, likely due to food contamination and so. It is good to have a cup of warm Ceylon tea, no sugar or milk added. It is handy too, if one does not have active carbon pill on hand. Tea bags could easily get from convenient store or even hotel room's complimentary bar.

Browsing through most published remedies, they do mention tea + honey, tea + mint pretty often. This shows, even if we can't get the accompany herbs or fruits, the remedy can serve us well too.

Plain yogurt may be a good remedy too [remember there was once checking this out for a friend middle of a night].

Disclaimer : This is based upon personal sharing & experience. One needs to know well on his/her own body and condition before consuming such remedy. One may be having gastric while though it is stomach ache, thus pure tea may lead to worsen condition. Take good note and know your body well, is essential!

Milky Corn @ Cameron Highlands

Told myself... here is an easy post to fulfill my urge of blogging. It had been a while since I last held my keyboard hitting towards Blogger's page. Life had been just hitting the ups and downs, not to be mentioned here, anyway.

In my recent trip to Cameron Highlands (it had been 2-3 years since I last there), I discovered a new species of fresh corn sold. Previously pearly (珍珠) corn was the greatest choice of all, where now this Milkly corn tasted even better. Its corn flesh are all in pure milky white. Indeed, without having to company a steamed corn with salt or butter, it tasted just equally good. Thanks to the agriculture technology we have.

In case you would like to try one, the uncle whom we used to buy corn from at Cameron's Kea Farm has this. We bought slightly earlier with RM10 for 11, in less than 30min where the crowd had gained, he sold for RM10 for 8.. :P Seems the price fluctuate even faster than the market stock exchange.

Have a try. I wonder if I am able to plant them in my backyard. hehe.

Travel - Taipei, Taiwan Jan 1-9, 2011

Happy New Year 2011! It was the 1st day of the year, and this trip was postponed since last November 2010 :) It was a 9D8N trip, nothing special except anticipating the cooling weather. Unfortunately, I was down with cool right before the trip... there goes my joy! Having to roam around the cities under 10C most of the time was not a good experience, a mask was my friend most the time... (*cough cough*)

Day 1 - We arrived around 8pm at Taipei Tao Yuan (桃园)airport, thanks to the greatest mistake I made without confirming my air ticket earlier... Enrich managed to book me for a direct flight to Taipei without a fee. The greatest experience the night was the hunt of our hotel. Taipei York, a budget or so call homestay type in the center of XiMenDing (西门町), the fashion district.

Day 2 - Out from Taipei, caught the new Highspeed Railway (HSR 高鐵) to TaiChung (台中) with NT700/pax per way. It wasn't cheap, but it was so convenient for 1 hour ride. Nothing much to venture at TaiChung. Following a book guide, we took a bus (客運)to Sun Moon Lake (日月潭), another tourist spot.

Enjoy the public transport ride most, it is all well integrated. Along the way, there are lots of 檳榔樹. At the road side, they are booth with 槟榔妹, I still don't quite get what would that mean for, hm...

Other than that, Taiwan especially the middle towards southern part are consider as fruits heaven. I saw huge apple custards (my favourite) and some fresh jujube (蜜棗), I love it so much!

Before hitting the 830pm train back to Taipei, we took another bus ride to a town center (can't recall the name), and ventured their night market. Oh yes, night markets are very famous among the Taiwanese, there's where you could get most local delicacies. But, you may end up with some not-so-promising one, if it is not highly recommended by various tour advisory book.

Day 3 - Let me think over.... guess it was a rainy day. We decided to change plan a little. Instead stay within the city center for shopping!

Breakfast is essential! We headed of for a quick westernized breakfast opposite our hotel. Not bad, as I noticed there are many customers every morning.

Commuting with MRT (臺鐵) is always ever easy. Taipei 101 tower & its surrounding shopping malls has been a must. Oh, and by the way shopping for Taiwanese Chinese books is always been a great pleasure. The varieties are far more than Kinokuniya here in KLCC. I had shopped a few, the only limitation I had was worrying my luggage space.

Food wise, I craved for ramen that afternoon. Night, we earlier made a trip to another night market we have yet ventured before. As introduced by the tour book, we head to WanHua (萬華). The street was rather disappointed, its more like an "old" market. Further checked... it was a red-district area before... no wonder!

Wasn't statisfied with the night market, we then made a another trip to the famous night market, ShiLin (士林) which we had ventured 4 years ago. Huge fried chicken (雞排) is famous, *drool*. It's just another night market a.k.a. pasar malam we have here in peninsular Malaysia. Only difference is walking through with nice weather... it had been so soothing nice!

Day 4/5 - It was still drizzling, but no choice. We have to continue our journey. This was the time we supposed to go outskirt from the city. Took the normal train, hit on the journey towards RuiFang (瑞芳). We didn't buy ticket in advance, so... it is just a matter of waking up early or late (I like this... as I could enjoy my sleep well, unfortunately it wasn't too good for a 'schedule-oriented partner :P). That was why we ended with lunch, instead of breakfast at the main Taipei Railway station. hehe... Me, I was craving for minced pork rice (滷肉飯). You can get one at the foodcourt at the train station, simple & easy.

Train journey towards RuiFang was not bad. It's a small town. If not mistaken, I lately watched a Taiwanese series that mentioned this place.

Our destination was JiuFen (九份) instead. Another tourist spot, at the hilly site that overseas the tip harbour of Taipei, JiLoong (基隆). It rained throughout the day. We checked into a homestay, and mind it... it was only 2 of us that bloody 2 nights. The owner was good, he still served us breakfast every morning. Unlike our previous trip to HuaLian (花蓮) over the spring/summer period, there were many tourists whom we could get to know each other.

Anyhow, staircases been everywhere within the hilly town. So, it is impossible to avoid steps, you gotto walk and climb the stairs every now and then. Old streets has always been tourist attraction place, JiuFen old street (九份老街) has all the shops like other tourist spots... we walked, watched and observed. Without fail, food is a must. I like the taro (芋頭圓) very much, a soupy of dessert served with round little balls made of flour and sweet potatoes and taros.

We had an expansive dinner within the old street on the 1st day of JiuFen. The restaurant was rather unique - old & shabby is the word. It retained the olden days feel. I remember it was cold that night, when we were the only 2 person sitting at the dining hall, I felt eerie... it was a cave styled, with even an old tree surviving itself within the restaurant for century! Thank god, few more couples one from Hong Kong another from Japan actually joined us a while later. The food was good but pricey.

JiuFen & its surrounding area was Gold mining area century ago. It's a gold town, and thus they have own gold muzium we visited the following day. Taiwanese has good relationship with the Japanese during WW2, there were Japanese influenced in the lifestyle of hostels around, which the authority had maintained it well in order to preserve its structure and made it a tourist attraction or education tour for their school kids.

No pictures to share, as it had been mainly my portrait pictures taken around. :)

Day 6 - Made our way back from the hilly area to RuiFang, by bus. We stayed around for some local foods from a hawker center nearby. I like the siewpao... nicely oven backed.

We then hit the train to another few stops before heading back to Taipei. Took the normal train towards ChingTong (青銅), another place which I remember watching on Taiwanese series, nice and peaceful place with lots of bamboo plates hung up for making wishes, if I recalled correctly. We didn't get ourselves there, due to the limited train frequency, worry that we might not able to catch the right timing back to Taipei.

We stopped at PingXi (平溪)& ShiFen (十份). Both place are scenic. ShiFen has its town separated by the railway road, we gotta cross the road whenever there is no train. We flew a wishing lantern over from the railway too (it is legal there), while it was even much famous over the last day of CNY.

Day 7 - Hot spring day! Before headed to WuLai (烏來), let me describe a little about breakfast within XiMenDing. It is not easy to hunt for breakfast, as I noticed people here are basically nite-owl (夜貓子) where they don't wake up early.. demand for breakfast is practically low. We have to bare ourselves with fast food. A Taiwanese fast food JSP is rather good. Power breakfast! I had their pork burger + coffee for 2 days in a roll!

Alright, the journey to WuLai was by MRT, stopped at XinDian (新店) and could catch a public bus to WuLai. Again, journey is so much easy with public transport.

There are many room-based hot spring hotels (hourly rated). Check out the price here. Alternately you can try steaming yourself over at the public area under the cold cold weather like other locals.

WuLai waterfall is scenic too. But the street was rather empty the time we reached, probably it was winter :( Hot spring boiled eggs are among the local delicacies, I tried one and like it much.

Day 8 - Consider the final day. Lastly was the day for Taipei International Floral exhibition. I expected a long long walk as the place could ended up at least 10KM. It was surprise I could walked for a long period, it was since 10am - 4pm! Distance could be 10KM or more. What drove me nuts like this? Well.. it was the rubber stamped the organizer placed at each exhibition hall. Their stamps were nice and colourfull. Gladly I had a passport sized note book, and I filled them up with the little priceless souvenir - the rubber stamps! if you like this idea, prepare yourself with a little notebook, you could get rubber stamped almost every tourist destination, i.e. train stations, MRT stations and so.

Night, we dragged ourselves to another night market, ShiDa (師大) which is nearby to Taiwan University. It was crowded on a Saturday, probably because it was a weekend. We bought nothing at this market, except some steamed bun for packed dinner. It was not within the market, but shop lot nearby.

Day 9 - Holiday ended. Finally, on a taxi off to the airport. The taxi driver was rather long winded, and he told me he is getting his tour guide license soon :-|, no wonder. Another eye-opener observation was, his taxi has a cabled TV... it was so fun!

Lastly, we had a transit flight at Kota Kinabalu. Sky was clear that noon, and I snapped the picture of Mt Kinabalu from the plane. Plus, the lagoon area which we enjoyed and had fun just a couple of weeks before this trip to Taiwan.

Finally...... it is done. My procrastination had brought me a huge delay to this post. I can now continue with other pending posts over the weekend. Stay tuned.

YET Kota Kinabalu, Dec 17 - 21 2010

From the date above, one would know this is an extreme dated post. I have been procrastinated in writing blog these days. 1st - not enough time for my ownself, 2nd - lost motivation, lost my readers? Well, one of the reason for me to blog is to keep my travel and life event record, and importantly is to share useful information.

YET means Year End Trip. We (the group) had this trip for many years now. It had been these while a road trip, but this time round we choose a air-trip instead. Honestly, I didn't have much expectation to the trip, as some of you could know... Kota Kinabalu is a place near my hometown which I used to stay for 2 years, and it has been a nearby city which my family and I will visit often during my childhood days. So, what to expect except a huge crowd traveling together - 17 of us!

Surprised me, well... the trip was an eye opener to me, and was planned well. Thanks to the organizer, and the holiday agent we engaged. Their service was beyond our expectation, we had a good tour guide too. In case you wish to know which company we engaged, check out their website Batangan Leisure. Our guide was Mr. CK!

As a summary, the trip was designed as such...

Day 1 (for me, where 1/2 of the group has started their trip 2 days earlier)
=====

Noon -- Arrived via AirAsia, checked in to Rainforest Lodge (a backpacker's place)

2pm -- Took a boat ride from Jesselton Point to Sapi Island (couldn't remember the exact fees, but it should not be >RM20/pax, try avoid taking the 1st counter as they might ask you chater the whole boat, just for 2pax)

6pm -- After returned from the island, and we chilled up with shower, headed to Yu Kee Bah Kut Teh at Gaya Street. Heard it is the best BKT in KK? After dinner we shopped a bit at a local department store Milimewa for snacks. Finally we chilled ourselves up at the bar corner just below our hotel.

Day 2
=====

7am -- Woke up early for Sunday market at Gaya Street; all kinds of handicrafts, local foods are available on the ~1km street. We had breakfast with yummy Laksa, hunt for the taste good pineapple bun, bought my snacks, i.e. Kuih Cincin & Keropok Jagung. Getting ready for our journey to Kinabalu Park later.

10am -- We checked out 1 day from the lodge, board ourselves to a 42 seater bus. We stopped by Mengkabung river, Batangan Baru Lagoon for batik printing, river cruise, crab & fish catching, Oyster farm, banana boat and kayaking. Lunch was provided, cooked with crab & fishes we caught along the cruise, plus 5kg of fresh oyster (RM5/kg) we bought from the farm. Food was yummy! plus we all ate under the rain, ever tasty and natural feeling.

Along the cruise, I learned more of the sea Bajau (an local ethnic of Sabahan), their way of living at the sea and even the location of their grave-yards. Colours of symbolic for the deceased, it was all well explained by our guide, though he is a Dusun (another local ethnic).

4pm -- Kids enjoyed watersports actvities, showered.. we then boarded the bus up the hilly mountains. Journey took about 1.5hours due to rain. We were lucky to have a safe and confident bus drive.

6pm -- Checked in at Zen Garden Resort, had steamboat dinner... and all night long chit chatting with snacks and wine.

I experienced diarrhea and continuous vomiting after a glass of wine. Probably due to the 1 oyster's bacteria or tiredness. After several vomits, I then had a sound sleep till the next morning, as if nothing had happened. Weird.

Day 3
=====

5am -- Woke up for Sunrise, hoping to capture a magnificent scene of Mt Kinabalu with the 1st light of glory. Unfortunately, it was a wet weather... there wasn't rain, but cloudy. So, the scene was not nice afterall. But the feel of morning breeze was fresh!

Honestly, mountain view from Zen Garden is not well strategic. Best is still staying at Kinabalu Park or Perkasa Hotel, if you wish to get a magnificent view of the mountain.

8am -- We continue journey to Poring Hot Spring. Poring means bamboo to the Dusun. On the way we stopped by the fruit & vegetable market. Tried a few local fruits (which I never try before), i.e. buah lemak (taste very orange milky), buah salak (looks like snake), and bought some local snacks too -- fried spinach or something vegetable.

9+am -- Arrived at Poring, we walked about around the mini jungle track.

2pm -- Adjourned to Canopy walk at Kinabalu Park. Lunch was back at Zen Garden. Canopy walk and short jungle tracking with cooling weather is the best ever feel to track on long "hanging bridge". We learned new things along the walk, i.e. buah kerosin, which in olden days the locals will collect the fruits to lighten up the house at nite; fig tree & fruits; smallest orchid in the world, etc...

Along when we headed downtown, we stopped by an area where we could see Rafflesia (largest flower in the world) blooms. It was day 3 that day, and being a perfect timing which the flower fully blooms. It takes >12moths to bloom, thus we need to pay RM10/pax for the visit. Well, it may be expansive, but as a tourist, it is worth to pay for the effort of the locals keeping the place natural & well preserved.

5++pm On the way, we passed by Tuaran town. It's where Mee Tuaran originated. Though it wasn't the best recommended shop, at least we brought business for 17 plates and introduced to most people who never try it before. I love Mee Tuaran, a type of fried egg noodle with char-siew! Yummy.

After a fulfilled tea time, we then need to continue our arranged dinner at Ocean Seafood. Gosh.. how can we finish all the dishes. Luckily, dishes were not as much as we thought of... but the most importantly were the special dishes served, seafood of course. I like the snail... kinda special and don't think I see it in West Malaysia.

Day 4

=====

8am -- Checked out after breakfast, headed to Tamparuli, Kiulu River for White Water Rafting.. "What was white water rafting?" at that time in my mind. I have no experience. After the try for Stage 1-2... it was soooo fun! Jumped into the chilling river water, stepped on slippery rocks, etc... reminded me the feel of going UW, but this bottom of river were all muddy, can't see any creature in there, hehe :)

We had lunch provided at the rafting center.

1pm -- While we still have some extra time before catching a flight back at 8pm. Our driver & guide dropped us at Philipino market for souvenir shopping. Such an ad-hoc arrangement, it was great to grab some lil souvenir.

5pm -- Our ever accommodating tour guide brought us to Tg Aru Beach. Unfortunately weather was not promising - it rained though with the bright sunlight. I managed to capture this casual sunset pic from the food court.

Alright... that's all for now. Phew... somemore pending blogs to complete, but yet my CNY holidays are almost over... oh dear!

CNY's eve, Feb 2 2011

It is another CNY, without knowing much of time flies, I had gone through CNY without me looking forward to. It had just been a phase in the calendar that I have to cross-over. Nevertheless, I am still here. Will I make a change for myself next year round, will see.

Presenting a set of CNY flowers I arranged all by myself a week plus ago. Looks just ok right? Well, with me whom don't really invest much on CNY decor, this is just me! All DIY flower arrangement will not cost me much, trust me, if you'd know where to source for it. It's my passion, somewhat but not all.

Happy Chinese New Year to all celebrating it. To those who don't celebrate, believe you would enjoy this festive & holiday seasons. May the world be peaceful in the year of golden rabbit, may all be blessed in good health and happy always. To those who are traveling on the road, be safe!
