Weekend Trip - Annual Durian Trip to Balik Pulau, Penang, June 2014

Welcome back... myself in blogging. Well accompanied with my new Bose SoundLink Mini :)

I have been going through my photo album back and forth, looks like I didn't have chance to utilize my Olympus mirrorless camera as much as I wish. Honestly, I still have not get good grasp with the shutter, still prefer my old DSLR.

Nevertheless, managed to get hold with my camera during this trip. Being a back seat passenger can be rather relaxing. The weekend trip was rather simple. Mission : Durian eating at Balik Pulau, any corner, everywhere, as much as we could... which we all ended with a surrender flag! No more durian for the next few days!
Passing By Ipoh

By the evening, after work. We headed up north. Stopped by Bukit Tambun's Jetty Seafood (船头海鲜楼)  for dinner. Food was not bad, perhaps we were very hungry at that time. The kuah-less satay selling next door tasted good.

As we approaching Balik Pulau late night. Not many choices for durian stall left. The first stop for durian was at Durian Pak Haji Balik Pulau. After getting the first fix, the second came right after our check-in to the host's home. Oh dear.. full supper.

Next morning, thank God our brunch was not durian. Balik Pulau market's food stall was our one-stop shop for Penang street food. But, our dessert right after brunch was durian. This will be the entire highlight of the trip! We were spoilt with many fresh durians, especially those famous breed of Balik Pulau. Eating varieties of durian must come with sequence. We we taught on how to enjoy it from the mildest, to the strongest. Session was really enjoyable, but to taste till the last bit of strongest... It caused us close to alcohol hangover, seriously... Some breed which I still remember, i.e. 青皮,紅蝦,林鳳嬌,林鳳嬌女兒。。can't remember the rest.

Time was too early for dinner. We tried exploring some hilly road up to Bukit Genting. This place was recommended by our host before. End results, the place was unexpectedly scenic, but food was so-so. They served Thai dishes, simple us find it's alright... the sunset view was superb, overlooking the sea and paddy fields. Bukit Genting Hill Leisure Park & Restaurant (小云顶中泰海鲜)

Weekend Trip - Sekinchan Cycling cum Homestay trip, Apr 20-21, 2014

Searched through the sequence of my photo folder, found that indeed I had a group leisure cycling event some time Apr this year. How could I missed? It was only a short weekend trip. It was a quick nature ride at the paddy field.

Simple event always started with good meal. We started out venture from a seafood meal at Kuala Selangor. It's not the best, I would say its the simplest to meet restaurant. Website http://riverviewseafoodrestaurant.com.my/ Lunch was so-so, I noticed the dish of cuttle fish satay seems extra ordinary, but it turned out the satay sauce ain't catchy to my liking. I could make better one with Satay Kajang's sauce, anyway it inspired me :)

Before checking in to our homestay, we dropped by a bicycle rental shop, just to check out the place for others whom didn't bring along their own bikes. AMG, stands for Ang Mo Gang (紅毛港)is a music cafe business cum bicycle rental shop. Located at the shop lots area, very near to the wet market of Sekinchan. It's a unique cafe, with the feel of 80s. They play music at night, too bad I didn't have the chance to hang out there those night. Check out their FB site for more detail (Mandarin) - https://www.facebook.com/AMGMusicCafe

We choose to stay at Sekinchan Summer Resort. Check out their FB site - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sekinchan-Summer-Resort/329040947111693 Overall was a nice experience, except it had been a 4 storey house, we get the last 2 upper units and thus it had been hassle to walk up stairs with luggage. That says, we have a windy balcony to chat and hangout whole night long. Rooms were clean and family hall was huge. Basic facilities were alright, with fridge and kitchen at each floor units. Its owned and manned by Chinese, expect basic decorations but most importantly its clean.

Our mission on the bike started 4PM that evening. After settling down with our rooms. Its been time for some of us to fix our own bikes, while the rest drove out to the shop to pick their bikes. We biked for at least an addition of 3KM from the homestay out to the shop one way. It was boring at daylight, as the scene of paddy were all symmetrically the same. I do enjoy the return ride over the dark, as it was so chilling nice at night.

We travelled across the main road from the Sekinchan town to Redang Beach. This place came famous after TVB drama namely 單戀雙城。

We had our dinner at downtown, before heading back to the homestay.

隆华海鲜饭店 (Sekinchan) was where we stopped for dinner. Simple seafood dinner, I would say.

The evening ride lasted 15.8KM for me. Was great.

Evening ride distance
The following morning, our ride started around 630AM. Same procedures, those without own bike drove to choose their bike, and we gathered there at the shop. My purpose for this trip was rather for the scenic morning and photography shoot. Not sure about the others. I didn't turn on my runkeeper the morning, as we stopped pretty much a few times throughout the 2 hours going around the paddy field.

Hard ride would always ended with a glad meal. Some had bah kut teh, while some of us had noodle. We tried the so called famous 洪肉, stewed pork leg for a morning breakfast. It was decent and nice. Was it a Teochew dish? I'm not too sure. 顺合茶餐室

Run kept only the distance from the shop back to homestay
The sweat was great, but not too well when sun approached the head of ours. It can be painfully hot, as paddy field has no shed. That's the only downside apart from its greenery.

Cycling - April KL Car Free day, Apr 6, 2014

Heard it was a monthly event, but not sure if DBKL (Kuala Lumpur Municipal Council) still active in organizing this. Earlier this year, the first Sunday of the month had been gazette as Car Free in the center of KL. Not the whole stretch of road been closed, but at least half of the on-going road. I have lost the route pic.. hence can't share. The crowd was not great, many was on bike, walk, run.. while some on skate boards, horse ride (believe these are officials) and so on.

My intention was just for the fun and experience. At least explored once and had the real 'feel' for event which is more towards the "fun" part, rather than the "competition" part. Partner and I literally retired (or retiring) from some event which content the nature of competition (OCBC is a definite No No), target hitting and most importantly unsafe route. I appreciate nature, as much that we should "feel" the greenery and oxygen, get ourselves connected to the nature, at some point - photography for future view of those feeling. Not the smell of carbon monoxide and over speeding vehicles passing along / opposite the bikers. Such route perhaps work fine for other cycling friendlier countries, such as OZ, Taiwan, Europe and so. But not in this Boleh Land city... except during the special gazetted day :)

My GoPro in action, once again... picture tells story below.

My next fun cycle event? One unsure, and one overseas! Looking forward, hope I still know how to ride by then. :=)

Dive Trip - Laguna @ Redang Island, Mar 28-30, 2014

First dive trip of 2014. Nothing special, except it was a partial sponsored company trip. A luxurious stay and dive, I would say. My buddy and I enjoyed the room, consider extreme luxury for divers like us. 4 pax room, equipped permanent beds. We paid for double on a quad room, how we wish we have more friends to accompany us with laughter. Nevertheless, we do enjoyed the quietness some times.

I had my GoPro Hero3 with me this time. Unlike the dive last year, where all files were wiped out as it re-written over. Not too bad this time. Except I forgot to turn it on the beginning of the dives , or rather don't know how to... Managed to took video only over the last few dives.

Nice weekend getaway. It was great, except for the long bus journey and traffic jam getting back to the city that Sunday. It was a long weekend, somewhat traffic was rather heavy at Gombak toll.

Wish to have more dive trips in 2014. Seems its impossible considering our buddies schedule and commitments. Till then, mates!
